The closest relation to the African elephant, the world's largest living land mammal, is said to be the comparatively tiny hyrax. Hyraxes are about the size of rabbits but in prehistoric times they were almost as large as cows. Elephants and hyraxes are thought to have come from the same group of mammals, millions of years ago.
