The smallest breed of dogs is the chihuahua but the smallest dog ever known was a Yorkshire terrier. It died in 1945 aged two years. It was 6.3 cm (21/2 in) tall at the shoulder, only 9.5 cm (33/4 in) from its nose to its tail and weighed an incredible 113 g (4 oz), about the same size as a hamster.
