Cunning colours
The patterned coats of mammals such as tapirs, tigers and giraffes help to hide them from enemies or to stalk their prey unnoticed. Their coats blend in with the patches of light and shadow in the jungles and grasslands where they live. The black and white coat of a Malayan tapir disguises it so well that, when it is lying on the forest floor, it looks like a harmless pile of stones.
