Largest herds
The largest herds ever recorded were those of springbok in southern Africa in the 19th century. When food and water became scarce, the springbok would set off in search of new pastures. The last great herd was seen in 1896. It is said to have covered 5,360 sq km (2,070 sq miles), over three times the area of London, England. There were over 10 million animals.
