The longest journey is made by grey whales. In late autumn they leave their feeding grounds in the Bering Sea and travel 9,650 km (6,000 miles) south along the west coast of the USA to Mexico. This is about the same distance as from London to Tokyo. In the spring they return north by the same route. The journey takes about 90 days.
