The sloth in South America hangs upside-down in trees. Unlike the hair of any other mammal, a sloth's long hair grows from its stomach down towards its back. Sloths are so dirty that green algae grow on their coats. This camouflages the sloth among the trees and is an ideal egg-laying site for some moths. The newly-hatched caterpillars feed on the algae.
