Wheat is one of the oldest known crops. It was probably first cultivated over 6,000 years ago in Mesopotamia - present-day Iraq - between the rivers Tigris and Euphrates. Many useful crop plants have their origin in the Middle East. Other examples are barley, oats and rye, peas and lentils, onions, olives, figs, apples and pears.
