Bacteria in the soil use nitrogen from the air and turn it into a form that plants can use. Plants then use the nitrogen in their cells to make many complex compounds. When animals eat plants (or other animals that have eaten plants) they continue the cycle. The nitrogen returns to the soil in the droppings of animals or from the decaying bodies of plants and animals.
