Trees and other plants that lose their leaves all at once each year are known as deciduous. The majority of broadleaved trees of the temperate woodlands are winter-deciduous, losing their leaves in the autumn, and remaining bare through the winter. This way they shut down their main life processes, such as transpiration and photosynthesis, remaining largely dormant until the spring.
