What lives on the forest floor?
The forest floor is a mish-mash of dead leaves, twigs, fungi and the roots and stems of woodland plants. The invertebrate life here is richly varied, with beetles, woodlice, worms, slugs, snails, springtails, ants, mites, and millipedes, to name but a few of the groups. These help break down the organic material, as well as providing food for small mammals such as mice and voles.
