Why are some termites magnetic?
Magnetic termites live in Australia. They build a nest in a flat blade shape. The flat sides point east and west, catching the cooler morning and evening sun, but only the narrow edge points north to the midday sun, so that only a little of the nest catches the sun at its hottest. The nest is often used as a compass by people in the bush, and this is how the nest gets its name.
