The Sun heats the ground and this heat is trapped close to the ground by the Earth's atmosphere. As you go up a mountain, and rise above the zone in which the heat is held, the atmosphere gets thinner and the air gets colder. It falls about I°C for every 150 metres (495 ft) in height.
