Why do butterflies and moths have eyespots?
The eyespots on the wings of a moth or butterfly can fool a predator into thinking it is a larger animal, and therefore leaves it alone. If it is attacked, the eyespots are more noticeable than the body and head. This can be a lifesaver, if a bird goes for these first, it leaves the butterfly in one piece, apart from a slice out of the wing.
