In cooler climates, when butterflies disappear in winter, many people assume they all die. Some do, but some species spend the winter hibernating before breeding the next year. In Britain, these include brimstone, peacock, and small tortoiseshell butterflies. In other parts of the world, butterflies may migrate with the seasons. The North American monarch butterfly spends its winter in sunny Mexico.
