Who helps termites digest their food?
Wood-eating termites do not actually digest wood themselves, but rely on protozoa (single-celled animals) that live in their gut to break it down. In the gut of other termites, large colonies of bacteria help to break down food. Termites also contain bacteria that take nitrogen from the air and turn it into body-building protein. Termites owe their success to these tiny creatures in their guts.
