What makes a cockroach hiss?
In the rainforests of Madagascar, big brown cockroaches come out at night, to forage for fungi and fallen leaves, especially after rainfall. Some grow up to 4 in (10 cm) long! To scare away attackers and warn off rivals, the cockroaches make a loud hissing sound, by pushing air out through two holes in their sides. Males also hiss more gently, to attract a female cockroach for mating.
